Lovely day out there today! Since it’s so nice, and since I’ve got to the The Long Walk to the Post Office with more orders very soon, I thought I’d introduce you to another service which I’m only just starting to offer…
Since my doctor has now stopped gently hinting and started outright ordering me to lose weight I’ve started walking a lot more around the lanes where I live (I live out in the country, which is nice in the summer but can be rather desolate in the winter). When I walk I take the old walking stick I was given when I had a serious leg infection a few years ago, not because I need it to walk now but basically as a hiking stick (to hoik branches out of the way etc). But I realised, mainly when asked by shopkeepers if I need help, that it makes me look like an invalid although I can walk perfectly well. 3D printing, again, was the answer.
I found a suitable stick, naturally felled by the wind, in my local woods and set about making my own hiking stick. Firstly the stick needed to be cleaned of the remainder of its bark, rubbed down and sealed with several coats of clear laquer (although not too much, giving it a nice tactile finish). I then cut it to length and designed a foot and handle mount for each end, attaching them with a generous layer of epoxy resin. Then came the handle…
My original idea was that I’d make the handle hollow and able to open so a handwarmer pouch could be inserted, but then the weather got warmer and kind of rendered that academic. But I decided to keep the opening design, meaning there’s space to hold coins, a phone charging bank or whatever else I want to put in there. I then, with the help of another generous coating of epoxy, attached it to the mounting.
And there you have it; one organically-reared stick, custom made with 3D printed extras! I’ve since been looking for likely sticks while out walking, so I can make more in the future if I feel like it. I’m still working on getting it right…… but if you’d like your own forest-grown 3D printed hiking stick then please send me a message. I’m more than happy to make one for you too!
